The government has reaffirmed its commitment to the timely completion of the 740-kilometre Isiolo–Mandera Road, with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen saying enhanced security measures are now in place to support uninterrupted construction.
Murkomen said the road corridor, being built under the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project, is expected to unlock northern Kenya, boost regional trade, improve connectivity, and enhance security.
He was speaking after a high-level multi-agency meeting with Roads and Transport CS Davis Chirchir and Defence CS Soipan Tuya, aimed at reviewing security arrangements to allow construction to proceed simultaneously across all sections of the corridor.
“We wish to reassure our development partners and contractors that security measures on the ground have been significantly bolstered and that adequate resources have been deployed to guarantee the safety of personnel and equipment along the entire corridor,” CS Murkomen said.
He added that the Interior Ministry will continue engaging regional leaders and conducting field assessments to ensure all required security protocols are in place and working effectively.
Defence CS Soipan Tuya emphasized that close inter-agency coordination and sustained security backing are key to the project’s success.
“Contractors can now resume work. The prevailing security situation is stable and well managed. We assure contractors of continued government support and protection as project implementation progresses,” CS Chirchir said.
The meeting was attended by Interior PS Dr. Raymond Omollo, Defence PS Dr. Patrick Mariru, Roads PS Eng. Joseph Mbugua, DIG-APS Gilbert Masengeli, Principal Administrative Secretary Jacob Narengo, and Eastern Command GOC Major General Luka Kutto, among other officials.
