Presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame has congratulated Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama following his election as President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), terming the outcome a pivotal moment for the legal profession and the country’s democratic path.
Kanjama secured 3,728 votes to defeat Peter Wanyama, who garnered 2,616 votes, and Mwaura Kabata, who received 2,086 votes. He takes over from Faith Odhiambo.
“I warmly congratulate Charles Kanjama SC on his well-deserved election as President of the Law Society of Kenya. His victory is a clear demonstration of the confidence members of the Bar have in his courage, competence, and commitment to the rule of law,” Kigame said.
He underscored the LSK’s responsibility in safeguarding constitutional principles at a time of heightened political and legal tension.
“LSK must reclaim and firmly hold its position as a fearless defender of constitutionalism and access to justice for all Kenyans. Our democracy depends on strong institutions that are willing to speak truth to power and defend the rights of the vulnerable,” he added.
Kigame referenced Kanjama’s previous legal challenge to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) verification process, arguing it reflected his readiness to question institutional conduct.
“Charles Kanjama has already demonstrated that he does not retreat when democratic processes are undermined. His bold legal actions have shown a willingness to hold institutions accountable and to safeguard the integrity of our electoral and governance systems,” he said.
He further expressed confidence in Kanjama’s ability to strengthen governance within the LSK and address concerns within the justice sector.
“The legal profession must be anchored on integrity and professional excellence. Under Kanjama’s leadership, I believe the LSK will elevate member welfare, counter institutional complacency, and rebuild public confidence in the justice system,” Kigame stated.
Concluding his message, Kigame wished the new LSK President success in office.
“I wish Charles Kanjama wisdom, strength, and courage as he assumes this important responsibility. Kenya needs a strong and independent Bar now more than ever,” he said.
