Healthcare services at Baringo County Referral Hospital remain disrupted after staff members downed their tools over delayed salaries and poor working conditions. The workers, drawn from different departments, marched to the Governor’s office in Kabarnet demanding payment of salary arrears and improved welfare. Hospital staff accuse the county government of failing to pay their salaries for the last four months, leaving many unable to meet basic needs. The workers say landlords have locked some of them out of their houses over unpaid rent, while others continue to struggle to support their families. The employees, some of whom have served on contract terms since 2018, say they have exhausted all avenues of engagement and now want the county government to address their grievances urgently. They insist they will not resume work until their concerns are addressed. Vivian Jebet, a nurse, says the salary delays have demoralized healthcare workers and affected service delivery. She notes that the maternity wing remains severely understaffed, with as few as two nurses sometimes expected to manage a 36-bed maternity ward that continues to receive new admissions around the clock. Nutritionist Keith Seroney says the prolonged salary delays have pushed many workers into financial distress. She says healthcare professionals are struggling to maintain their own wellbeing, adding that she does not want to be a nutritionist who is malnourished while advising others on healthy living. The workers insist they will remain off duty until the county government addresses their concerns.
