TB Declines in Kenya but Nairobi Lags in Fight Against Disease

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has raised alarm over Nairobi’s weak response to TB, despite the county carrying one of the highest TB burdens and recording poor treatment outcomes.

During this year’s World TB Day event in Nairobi, the government unveiled new detection methods, including AI-supported diagnostics and rapid molecular testing, aimed at improving early diagnosis.

Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni emphasized the need for early testing, sustained funding, and targeted support for high-risk groups, particularly people living with HIV.

Officials warn that ending TB will require more than medical intervention, pointing to poverty, overcrowding, and stigma as key drivers of transmission—especially in urban areas.
