Kiambu Residents Decry High Cost of Living Amid Fuel Protests

Residents of Kiambu have accused security agencies of using excessive force while dispersing demonstrators protesting the rising cost of fuel that has affected livelihoods across the country. The irate residents say the high cost of living has significantly changed their daily lives and are urging the government to reconsider policies they say are hurting ordinary Kenyans. Business activities in Kiambu town came to a standstill as traders closed shops, petrol stations shut down, and banks suspended operations after police engaged youths in running battles. Tear gas and gunshots were fired into the air to disperse the crowds, turning sections of the town into a no-go zone. Margaret Njeri, a fruit vendor, accused police of using tear gas on what she described as peaceful protesters demanding a reduction in fuel prices. She called on Members of Parliament to represent the interests of citizens and hold the government accountable. Her sentiments were echoed by Lucy Nyongesa, a Gen-Z protester, who said it was unfair for Kenyans exercising their democratic right to protest to be met with tear gas and live bullets. She expressed dissatisfaction with the current administration over the rising cost of living.
