JOHO DECLARES WAR ON ILLEGAL FISHING!

Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has called for stronger international cooperation to combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, warning that the vice continues to threaten marine ecosystems, food security and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Speaking during the 11th Our Ocean Conference in Mombasa, Joho proposed the creation of a global blacklist targeting vessels, companies and individuals involved in illegal fishing activities to prevent offenders from operating across international waters.

The Cabinet Secretary also revealed Kenya’s plans to seek a larger tuna quota from the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission and announced a Sh32 billion investment plan aimed at improving the livelihoods of fisherfolk through strategic partnerships and infrastructure development.
