Machakos University Fires Workers on WhatsApp

Casual workers at Machakos University are accusing the institution of unlawful dismissals after allegedly being fired through WhatsApp messages without formal notices or hearings.

Some workers claim pregnant women were sent home while still on duty, while others say they worked for years without permanent contracts despite labour laws requiring otherwise.

The Machakos County Labour Office says more than 50 affected workers have served between one and five years and should have been absorbed on permanent terms. Labour officials now threaten legal action against the university.

University management has confirmed receiving complaints and says discussions are ongoing, while allegations of harassment are set to be investigated.
