‘Stop Locking Students In!’ MPs React to Deadly School Fire

West Pokot leaders have called for stricter safety measures in boarding schools following the deadly fire at Utumishi Senior School that claimed the lives of several learners.

Pokot South MP David Pkosing and Tiaty MP William Kamket have urged school administrators to prioritize learner safety by ensuring adequate night supervision in dormitories and maintaining accessible emergency exits. The leaders criticized the practice of locking students inside dormitories to prevent them from leaving at night, warning that such actions can have fatal consequences during emergencies.

The legislators have also called on the Ministry of Education, school boards and administrators to conduct regular safety audits and fully implement safety regulations to prevent future tragedies.

Watch for more on the growing calls for reforms in school safety standards across the country.
