Embu Land Drama:Two Men, One Name, One Land

A decades-long land dispute involving two men sharing the same name, Ireri Ndwiga, could become one of Kenya’s most historic land cases as it edges closer to the Supreme Court.

The battle over a 15-acre parcel in Embu County has dragged through courts in Meru, Embu and Nyeri for more than 30 years, with allegations of fraud, fake identification documents and disputed ownership dating back to the 1960s and 1970s.

Bedan Ireri Murwamiti insists the land belongs to his Gicuku clan and says he legally changed his name to Ireri Ndwiga in 1975. However, courts ruled against him, finding that the ID used during the name change process was fictitious and part of a fraudulent scheme to acquire the land.

The Court of Appeal upheld earlier rulings in favour of the other claimant, Ireri Ndwiga, saying he proved he was the rightful owner of the land parcel Gaturi/Weru/313.

Bedan is now seeking certification to move the matter to the Supreme Court, arguing the case raises major public interest questions affecting many Kenyans facing similar land disputes.
