Saba Saba: Mombasa Activists Demand Justice for Victims of Police Brutality

Civil society organisations in Mombasa have called for independent investigations into allegations of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings and police brutality during this year’s Saba Saba commemorations.

The groups presented a memorandum urging the government, the National Police Service, IPOA and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to investigate alleged human rights violations, prosecute those responsible and strengthen accountability within the security sector.

They also called for police to uphold constitutional rights during public demonstrations while urging Kenyans to continue defending democracy through peaceful civic engagement.

The petition was received by Mvita Deputy County Commissioner Katana Kalume, who assured residents that the government would consider the concerns raised and reiterated that criminal suspects should be arrested and processed through lawful procedures.
