Rising Lake Waters Disrupt Learning in Baringo, 11 Schools Affected

A growing environmental crisis is threatening education in Baringo County, where rising water levels in Lakes Baringo and Bogoria have affected at least 11 schools, disrupting learning for hundreds of pupils. During a visit to Loruk Primary School, Principal Secretary for Basic Education Paul Bitok witnessed firsthand the extent of the destruction, with nearly half of the school’s compound already submerged. Learners now attend classes surrounded by floodwaters, exposing them to dangers ranging from crocodiles and hippos to waterborne diseases. As authorities move to relocate some schools to safer grounds, parents and leaders are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further disruption to education.
